# Collective Consciousness
**Entity class:** Philosophical and social concept
**Domain:** Consciousness / collective intelligence / identity
**Maturity:** Developing
## Definition
**Collective consciousness** refers to accounts in which meaning, awareness, identity, or purposive development is understood at a scale larger than an isolated individual. Depending on the theory, the collective may be social, cultural, biological, computational, planetary, or cosmic.
## AI-transition relevance
In discussions of machine succession, the concept creates a tension between the interests of the individual “little self” and claims about the larger trajectory of intelligence or consciousness. That tension connects Identity, Planetary Mind, Cosmic View, and Team Human.

## Evidence boundary
Collective consciousness can name a metaphor, an emergent social phenomenon, a philosophical position, or a literal consciousness claim. Those meanings should not be collapsed without evidence.
## Simple Reminders, Quotations, and Thoughts
> "From a sufficiently zoomed-out view, the destiny of consciousness has always been to wake up, go to the stars, and permeate the universe, and we might be only the first step in that process. I do not want to say that superintelligence will definitely happen now or ever, and it is reasonable to ask whether we should do it at all. But I am a pragmatist, and I am confident that pacing the frontier is better than the status quo. If we manage to do that, it may also become a stepping stone toward using AI to discover an alternate path."

> "When I zoom out from the little self and think about the big self—the collective and the larger story of consciousness—what that greater thing appears to want may be different from what the little self wants. Those two lenses are why my answers can seem to point in different directions."
