# Competent Intelligence
**Domain:** Artificial Intelligence / Capability / Economics
**Doc Type:** Concept Node
**Maturity:** Developing
## Definition
**Competent intelligence** is artificial intelligence reliable enough to complete a bounded task at an economically useful level, even if it does not satisfy contested definitions of artificial general intelligence or superintelligence. The threshold is operational: the system performs the job, avoids failure often enough to be trusted, fits the workflow, and costs less than the available alternative.
## Why Competence Matters
Economic transformation does not have to wait for a metaphysical consensus about machine understanding. A system that writes acceptable software, coordinates an agentic workflow, processes claims, forecasts demand, or controls a robot can alter labor demand as soon as its competence, interface, cost, and institutional acceptance cross the deployment threshold. Frontier AI may discover the capability first, but falling cost and integration determine when competence becomes economically general.
## Distinctions
Competent intelligence is narrower than general-purpose AI and does not imply superintelligence, consciousness, wisdom, or moral agency. It explains why the immediate economic question can be more concrete than the ultimate intelligence question: what can the system do reliably enough that someone will reorganize work around it?

> “The thing that impacts people economically is not artificial superintelligence or general intelligence. It is actually competent intelligence.”

> "The models are smart enough now. We need them not to make mistakes and not to drop the ball, and that is exactly where everyone is going. That is why Muse, Instinct, and similar systems will do tremendously well: they can become amazing personal assistants, chiefs of staff, and organizers. We all need some competence in our lives."
