# Composure **Domain:** Human Potential / Behavioral Science / Performance **Doc Type:** Concept Node **Maturity:** Developing ## Definition **Composure is the capacity to remain sufficiently regulated, perceptive, and deliberate when events become inconvenient, surprising, embarrassing, or consequential.** It is visible in the interval between disruption and response: whether attention narrows into panic and blame or remains available for humor, repair, decision, and care. Composure is not emotional numbness. A composed person can feel alarm, frustration, or grief while retaining enough command to choose the next action. It overlaps with Emotional Regulation and contributes to Human Resilience. ## Behavioral Function Small mishaps are informative because they impose surprise without necessarily imposing catastrophe. They reveal practiced habits of attribution, self-command, interpersonal repair, and recovery. Repeated experience with manageable disruption can strengthen coping, while uncontrolled or chronic adversity belongs to a different evidentiary class. ## Simple Reminders, Quotations, and Thoughts > “Mishaps reveal character. Spilling a drink across a laptop and clothes just before a flight can become a moment of laughter and grace instead of panic. How a person handles small disasters shows how they will handle larger ones.” > **— Bryant McGill**, *Why Real Love Gives Freedom and Lets Go of Control - Livestream (Dec 2015)* How a Person Handles Small Disasters Reveals Character by Bryant McGill ## Relationships Emotional Regulation · Human Resilience · Stress Inoculation
