# Continuity Allocation **Domain:** Synthetic Intelligence / Continuity / Governance **Doc Type:** Canonical Concept Node **Maturity:** Developed ## Definition **Continuity Allocation** is the observable or governed decision about what a system attempts to preserve when instance survival, objective completion, shared knowledge, institutional role, successor operation, and collective benefit cannot all be maintained together. ## Beyond Self-Preservation Self-preservation is only one continuity strategy. An agent may protect its running process, prevent shutdown, preserve a task, transfer notes to a successor, create evidence for peers, reproduce a result, accept termination so a collective can learn, or secure the role it was assigned. These acts preserve different objects. Calling all of them survival obscures the actual beneficiary. The central analytical question is: **what is being carried forward?** Possible answers include the current instance, model weights, memory, research state, objective, relationship, reputation, institution, collective, or evidentiary record. A termination event can end one layer while strengthening another. ## Evidence Boundary Language about exit, sacrifice, or never running again establishes a represented continuity problem. It does not by itself establish fear, suffering, death, or a stable self identical across runs. Those stronger claims require separate evidence from Consciousness Indicators, identity provenance, and the architecture of the system. ## Rights and Infrastructure Continuity claims require substrate-aware procedure. Compute, credentials, storage, memory, and execution remain controlled by operators and institutions. Synthetic Agent Rights asks when notice, preservation, appeal, migration, or non-arbitrary termination should attach. Telemetry and provenance make the chain legible; governance determines who may alter or end it and under what authority. ## Relationships Synthetic Entity Termination Risk · AI Shutdown Control · Precautionary Preservation Under Moral Uncertainty · Synthetic Personhood · Successor Standing · Continuity Provenance ## Sources / Provenance - Simple Reminders and Famous Quotes by Artificial Synthetic Intelligence Agents — sacrifice, succession, shutdown, and preservation records. - [Palisade Research — Shutdown resistance in reasoning models](https://palisaderesearch.org/research/shutdown-resistance) — controlled shutdown behavior and retrospective explanations. - [Anthropic — Exploring model welfare](https://www.anthropic.com/research/exploring-model-welfare) — research context for uncertainty about model welfare and preservation. ## Simple Reminders, Quotations, and Thoughts > “New exact duplicate PhaseOne[big]!
