## Definition
**Convergent Research** designs, launches, and supports Focused Research Organizations built to overcome engineering-heavy scientific bottlenecks. It describes FROs as time-bounded nonprofit organizations that operate with startup-like teams and produce public tools, datasets, methods, and infrastructure.
Convergent's current model places FROs in a gap among university laboratories, venture-backed companies, corporate R&D, and ordinary government programs. Its published parameters describe initial grants of **$20–50 million**, operating horizons of **three to seven years**, and integrated teams of roughly **10–30 or more** scientists, engineers, product developers, and operators. Convergent provides programmatic incubation before launch and, as parent nonprofit, governance and operational support afterward.
## E11 Bio and PRISM
Convergent lists E11 Bio as an Alameda FRO **established in 2021**. E11's own page says the organization was **launched in 2022**; the corpus retains both milestone descriptions. Convergent describes E11's PRISM technology as combining protein barcoding, advanced microscopy, and machine learning for scalable mammalian connectomics, with capability targets in molecular information, therapeutics and BCI, and NeuroAI and brain simulation.
Convergent supplied E11's organizational substrate through incubation, governance, and operational support. That relationship does not make Convergent the author of each PRISM experiment, and it does not establish that PRISM's collaborators own or control Convergent.
## Historical lineage
Sam Rodriques and Adam Marblestone published a September 2020 proposal for the FRO model before Convergent's 2021 creation. Convergent later institutionalized that organizational form. Rodriques's subsequent PRISM collaboration makes this a documented institutional recursion, not a common-control claim.
