## Definition
**A Crown Dependency is a self-governing possession of the Crown that is neither part of the United Kingdom nor a sovereign Commonwealth realm.** Jersey, Guernsey, and the Isle of Man are the three Crown Dependencies.
Each has its own legislature, legal system, courts, and fiscal arrangements. The Crown acts through distinct constitutional relationships, while the United Kingdom holds responsibilities including defense and international representation.
## War With Empire Context
Crown Dependencies matter to the series because constitutional status, financial jurisdiction, beneficial-ownership rules, and UK responsibility do not align in the same way as they do inside the United Kingdom. They are part of the wider [[wiki/Crown Topology|Crown topology]] but should not be collapsed into [[wiki/British Overseas Territory|British Overseas Territories]].
## Boundary
Constitutional connection does not establish that every financial or administrative decision is directed from London. The relevant authority must be traced through the specific island's law and constitutional arrangement.
