# Darwin Bioinformatics Environment **Domain:** Bioinformatics / Scientific Programming **Doc Type:** Software System Node **Maturity:** Historical **Primary Source:** The Art is Long: Vespucci of Immortality **Related:** ETH Zurich, protoDarwin, XNU, Phylogenetics --- ## Definition The **Darwin bioinformatics environment** was a scientific programming system developed by Gaston Gonnet's Computational Biochemistry Research Group at ETH Zurich. Its name expanded to **Data Analysis and Retrieval With Indexed Nucleotide/peptide sequences**. ## Function Darwin supported indexed sequence retrieval, phylogenetic analysis, and molecular-evolution work. In the article it is one of three independently named Darwin systems whose practical work concerns selection, retrieval, reuse, and the survivability of overwhelming scientific information. ## Boundary The recurrence of the name is documented; common intent among the institutions is not.
