## Definition
A **data center** is a purpose-built cyber-physical facility that maintains computation, storage and networking through coordinated land, power, cooling, security, control, maintenance and operational systems.
It is not adequately described as a room containing computers. The facility participates in the computational result because no workload persists without electrical delivery, heat rejection, data motion, fault handling and human serviceability.
## Historical Lineage
The computer room concentrated expensive mainframes and environmental support. Enterprise data centers standardized protected institutional computing. Internet and cloud systems expanded into warehouse-scale facilities and regions.
