# Defense
## Definition
Institutions and capabilities protect the nation and supply military readiness, deterrence, and operational effectiveness. The article follows the technological and industrial work contributing to those functions.
## Regional role
Defense, national security, and technology meet through specific work: an observation becomes information, a model supplies a qualified prediction, software connects the result with a decision, and a capable institution acts. Austin concentrates many of those functions. The civilian-intelligence market supplies firms, specialists, platforms, data, and agents that can contribute at several stages.
