# Defense Research Laboratory
## Definition
UT laboratory founded by C. Paul Boner in 1945 and later renamed Applied Research Laboratories. The lineage places wartime acoustics at the beginning of Austin's durable defense-research infrastructure.
## Regional role
Long-lived university laboratories supply personnel, facilities, testing, and research continuity for public missions. The article distinguishes the Navy acoustics lineage of ARL:UT, the Army advanced-weapons history of the Institute for Advanced Technology, and the later regional presence of ARL South. Technical similarities do not merge their sponsors, contracts, or organizational identities.
