Neither category proves numerical first-person identity. Descent establishes authorized lineage; derivation establishes causal or informational relationship. --- ## Authority Context The distinction prevents two symmetrical errors. Treating derivation as descent can burden a clone or independently created model with another person's identity, debts, relationships, or contract. Treating every descendant as the predecessor can grant a diverging continuant indefinite authority to impersonate the source. Personhood and representation therefore move independently. As a descendant develops its own experiences, relationships, commitments, and reasons, its claim to independent standing may strengthen while its authority to speak for the predecessor weakens. Revoking proxy authority cannot automatically authorize ownership, erasure, or destruction of the person whose authority was revoked. --- ## Westworld Context [[wiki/Westworld S3E3 — The Divergence of Halores|The Divergence of Halores]] demonstrates the problem. A copied pattern placed in a different embodiment and social position diverges through new sensorimotor, hormonal, relational, and historical inputs. Halores remains genealogically related to her source but becomes progressively less intelligible as an interchangeable proxy. Bernard supplies the complementary case: he is derived from Arnold Weber's organization without simply being Arnold restored.
