# Design Science **Domain:** Systems Design / Ethics / Foresight **Doc Type:** Concept and Practice Node **Maturity:** Developed **Related:** Buckminster Fuller, Whole Systems Thinking, Resource Optimization, Design for Dignity, Transition Architecture --- ## Definition In the Fuller lineage, **Design Science** means the comprehensive, anticipatory and value-directed application of scientific principles to the design of humanity's total environment. ## Components - **Comprehensive:** begin with the larger system before optimizing a part. - **Anticipatory:** model consequences and preferred futures before lock-in. - **Design:** deliberately structure environments toward stated values. - **Science:** use generalizable principles, evidence and iterative testing. Unlike value-neutral descriptions of optimization, Fuller's formulation asks whether a design helps make humanity successful without ecological damage or advantage purchased through another person's deprivation. ## Corpus Function Design science links Fuller to algorithmic governance. Both work through models and system-level intervention. The constitutional difference is whether affected people participate in defining the objective, can inspect the model and retain meaningful exit and contestation rights. In Beyond the Sea, design science is the constructive side of transition architecture. A receiving substrate should not merely work; it should preserve dignity, agency, ecological viability and the ability to renegotiate the terms of mediation. ## Key Insight **Design becomes governance when it structures the environment in which other agents must act.** ## See Also Objective Function, Transition Consent, Co-Creative Substrate, Systems Ecology ## Sources / Provenance - Buckminster Fuller Institute, design science: https://www.bfi.org/about-fuller/big-ideas/design-science/ - BFI design science primer: https://www.bfi.org/about-fuller/big-ideas/design-science/design-science-primer/
