## Definition
The **Department of Defense Digital Engineering Strategy** is a policy framework for using authoritative models and data across a system's life cycle, connecting engineering activity through digital environments rather than relying primarily on disconnected documents.
## Significance
The strategy formalizes a passage from representation to institutional action: models become shared working surfaces for design, testing, acquisition, operation, and sustainment. This increases coordination but also raises questions about provenance, model authority, access, and the ability to correct the source on which downstream decisions depend.
