# Digital Thread
**Domain:** Systems Engineering / Provenance / Continuity
**Doc Type:** Canonical Bridge Concept
**Maturity:** Developed
## Definition
A **digital thread** is a traceable chain connecting an entity's observations, records, models, transformations, operational states and decisions across time. It preserves how one representation became another and which actors, tools and authorities participated in the change.
## Continuity Application
For continuity infrastructure, the thread must span more than document history. It may connect acquisition events, source records, annotations, model versions, executable packages, runtime states, restorations, forks, migrations, credentials, consent instruments and operator interventions. Each event should identify its inputs, transformation, responsible actor, authority, time, integrity evidence and resulting state.
The thread supports Continuity Provenance and Restoration Disclosure. It also makes Contestable Representation possible by allowing a subject or representative to identify where an inference, edit or administrative classification entered the operational record.
## Identity Boundary
A complete digital thread can prove traceable derivation. It cannot by itself prove numerical identity. A fork and its source can share a perfect thread up to the branching event and become distinct continuants afterward. A reconstructed model can have impeccable provenance without being the person represented. The thread therefore supplies evidence to Durable Identity and Successor Standing rather than deciding those questions automatically.
## Key Insight
**The digital thread makes transformation inspectable without pretending that traceability settles personhood.**
