## Definition
**Diplomacy** is Allan B. Calhamer's strategy game, first commercially released in 1959, in which players represent European powers before the First World War. Orders resolve simultaneously; negotiation, coalition formation, promises, and betrayal replace dice as the central uncertainty.
## Significance
Diplomacy isolates proactive coalitionary skill. Because alliances are unenforceable and randomization is absent, outcomes depend heavily on credibility, inference, coordination, and the timing of defection. It is a compact model of how rules can bound action without eliminating deception.
