# Discipline **Domain:** Behavioral science / Self-command / Human potential **Doc Type:** Canonical concept node **Maturity:** Developed ## Definition Discipline is the reliable direction of attention and action toward a chosen standard or aim, especially when immediate mood or reward points elsewhere. ## Mechanism and Significance Routine reduces the number of decisions required to continue meaningful work. Focus selects the relevant task, repetition builds capacity, and a governing mission keeps the routine connected to an authored purpose. Freedom requires form when form increases the person's practical ability to act. ## Evidence Boundary Discipline is not automatically virtuous. Repetition can serve another person's plan, reinforce a harmful system, or become rigid self-punishment. Its value depends upon the goal, the degree of authorship, and the consequences for the person and others. ## Relationships Self-Determination · Focus · Persistence · Mission ## Simple Reminders, Quotations, and Thoughts > “Many people feel like machines on someone else's assembly line.
