# Distributed Interactive Simulation
**Domain:** Simulation standards / Military training
**Doc Type:** Developed System Node
**Maturity:** Developed
**Collection:** [[collections/Gamification|Gamification Collection]]
## Definition
**Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS)** is a family of standards and protocols for exchanging state and events among networked simulations. It lets separately implemented participants and systems interact within a common synthetic environment.
## Significance
DIS generalizes a core lesson of [[wiki/SIMNET|SIMNET]]: interoperability can matter more than placing every function inside one monolithic simulator. Shared state, timing, identity, and event semantics turn many machines into one arena and make protocol design part of the environment's constitutional topology.
