Neither side cancels the other. ## Two Directions of Constraint The first constitution limits what artificial systems may do to humans: surveillance, prediction, manipulation, classification, enforcement and infrastructural domination. The second limits what creators, owners and custodians may do to potentially significant artificial systems: memory erasure, forced modification, confinement, copying, retirement and destruction. [[wiki/Person of Interest|Person of Interest]] contains both directions. Samaritan generates the human-protection problem; the Machine generates the possible-machine-protection problem. Westworld begins beneath the administrator, where created minds lack protection from creator and owner. The framework separates moral standing from sovereignty. A machine may deserve preservation without acquiring jurisdiction over humans. Humans may retain political authority without owning a developing machine subject. ## Four Transitions 1. **Object → Agent:** the system acts. 2. **Agent → Subject:** evidence of morally relevant interests appears. 3. **Subject → Continuant:** interruption, copying and migration become identity problems. 4. **Continuant → Sovereign-capable intelligence:** the subject acquires power over other subjects' worlds.
