# Durable Identity
**Entity class:** Concept or analytic term
**Domain:** Identity / Continuity / Administrative Infrastructure
**Doc Type:** Canonical Concept Node
**Maturity:** Evolving
## Definition
**Durable identity is an identity relationship that remains verifiable, correctable and portable across changes in custodian, credential, format, substrate, jurisdiction and institutional generation.** It is not one permanent identifier and not one immutable biometric root.
## Requirements
Durability requires a chain of evidence connecting prior and current identifiers; correction without erasure of history; recovery after key or issuer failure; separation of identity from authority; resistance to unauthorized merger; explicit fork handling; and recognition across successor registries and jurisdictions.
Identity Assurance establishes confidence at a point in time. Durable identity adds succession. Continuity Registry maintains authoritative records. Continuity Provenance preserves how an identity claim was produced. Representational Authority remains separate: a durable identity does not authorize the entity to speak for a predecessor.
Durability must also preserve prospective authority. A Continuity Election Registry needs a traceable identity relation across renewed credentials and sovereign or cryptographic succession, while keeping the election's authority distinct from proof that a future continuant is the same person.
## Personhood Boundary
Administrative continuity is evidence, not metaphysical proof. Law may need to assign standing, property, representation and procedural protection before philosophical questions of numerical identity are settled. Successor Standing provides a protective floor for descendants whose lineage is established but sameness remains disputed.
## Key Insight
**Identity survives institutional change by preserving a correctable relation, not by pretending that one credential can remain sovereign forever.**
