# Earth Observation
**Concept class:** Planetary sensing and remote-measurement domain
## Definition
**Earth observation** uses satellite, airborne, terrestrial, and in-situ instruments to measure the planet’s land, oceans, atmosphere, ice, ecosystems, infrastructure, and changing hazards. Optical, thermal, radar, LiDAR, gravimetric, and other sensing modes describe different physical properties and carry different uncertainty, revisit, resolution, and weather constraints.
