# Edge Inference
Edge inference runs a model close to where its input is produced: on a phone, in a car, inside a camera, on a factory floor, or in a small facility near a city rather than in a distant campus. It exists because some requirements cannot be satisfied by any amount of central capacity, and because a great deal of useful work does not need a frontier model at all.

> Some answers have to happen where the question is, because light is only so fast and the network is only so reliable.
## Why it is necessary rather than merely convenient
**Latency has a floor.** Propagation delay alone is roughly five microseconds per kilometer of fiber, and real paths add switching and queueing; see Fiber Route Diversity. A control loop that must close in milliseconds, a vehicle's perception system, a robot's balance, cannot wait for a round trip.
**Connectivity is not guaranteed.** A vehicle, a remote site, or a device in a building's interior must continue working when the network does not.
**Bandwidth is finite.** Continuous video from thousands of cameras exceeds what is reasonable to transport; processing locally and transmitting conclusions is orders of magnitude cheaper.
**Energy and cost.** A small accelerator integrated into a device performs the work with less silicon, less power, and no round trip; a neural processing unit inside a system-on-chip is the cheapest inference in the world per useful answer.
## The hardware
Neural processing units are integrated alongside the main processor in phones, laptops, cars, cameras, and robots, supplied by the major mobile and personal-computer silicon vendors and by specialist automotive and embedded manufacturers. Dedicated inference cards serve small local facilities, and alternative inference architectures suit latency-sensitive deployment at modest scale; see Inference Accelerator. The models are prepared for the environment by quantization, distillation, and pruning, so that a model which would occupy a data-center accelerator runs within a device's memory and power budget.
## The division of labor that is emerging
The practical pattern places small, fast models at the edge for the work that must be immediate, with escalation to central capacity for the work that requires a frontier model. A device handles perception and routine response locally and consults a larger model when the question warrants it; see Inference Request Routing. That architecture is both cheaper and more robust than either extreme, and it is why the two layers are complements rather than competitors.
The national dimension is worth noting: edge capability puts intelligence into American vehicles, factories, farms, clinics, and public safety equipment without requiring every one of them to hold a connection to a distant campus. It is the mechanism by which the capacity being built in a few places becomes useful in all of them.

## Evidence posture
- **Established:** propagation delay on the order of five microseconds per kilometer of fiber setting a latency floor; bandwidth economics favoring local processing of continuous sensor streams; neural processing units integrated into system-on-chip designs in phones, laptops, cars, cameras, and robots from major mobile, personal-computer, automotive, and embedded silicon vendors; quantization, distillation, and pruning as the model preparation techniques; the local-with-escalation architecture.
- **Established:** on-device processing requiring less silicon and lower cost than a round trip to central capacity, with data remaining on the device.
