## Definition
**Electrocorticography (ECoG)** records electrical activity using electrodes placed on the cortical surface. It provides stronger and more spatially specific signals than scalp EEG while remaining less spatially granular than many penetrating intracortical arrays.
## Interface relevance
ECoG is important for seizure localization, cortical mapping, speech decoding, and BCI research. Its clinical context, electrode geometry, sampling configuration, timing, and surgical provenance are necessary parts of any reusable neural record.
