## Definition
**Ephaptic coupling** is the influence of extracellular electric fields on nearby neuronal membrane potentials and spiking without requiring a direct synaptic connection between the affected cells.
## Architectural Significance
Neuronal activity generates electric fields, and those fields can in turn alter neuronal activity. In [[articles/Analog Cognition and the Architecture of Continuity|Analog Cognition and the Architecture of Continuity]], this provides a physically ordinary feedback path through which a distributed state generated by local components can become one of the conditions governing their subsequent behavior.
