# Equilibrium Engineering

## Definition
**Equilibrium engineering** is the deliberate redesign of incentives, rules, information and enforcement so that cooperation, repair or restraint becomes more stable than defection.
It draws on [[wiki/Nash Equilibrium|Nash Equilibrium]], bargaining theory, mechanism design and institutional design. It does not treat equilibrium as justice. Stable arrangements can preserve domination, distribute harms unfairly or trap every participant in a collectively inferior outcome.

Reparative equilibrium engineering therefore changes the payoff structure while preserving rights. It asks how public benefit, private incentive, historical responsibility, local agency and planetary survival can be aligned so that no powerful actor profits by abandoning the whole.
## AI Boundary
AI can model strategies, identify unstable incentives and compare intervention paths. It is not automatically impartial, and it does not derive moral legitimacy from mathematical competence. Justice constrains the admissible equilibria before optimization begins.
## Key Insight
**Nash helps explain what can remain stable; constitutional and reparative principles determine what is worth stabilizing.**
