# Experiential Reality vs Causal Provenance **Domain:** Epistemology / Identity / Covert Social Architecture **Doc Type:** Concept Node **Classification:** Provenance and Self-Knowledge Concept **Maturity:** Developed **Related:** Construction Transparency, Perceptual Sovereignty, Narrative Control, World Simulation, Authority–Identity Separation ## Definition **Experiential Reality vs Causal Provenance separates whether an experience genuinely occurred from whether the subject correctly knows why it occurred, who authored it, and what roles other participants actually occupied.** An event can be experientially real while causally misrepresented. A staged argument can produce real fear. A recruited acquaintance can produce real attachment. An undercover officer can participate in a real relationship under false identity. A manipulated opportunity can produce a real decision. The deception lies not necessarily in the sensory event but in its **provenance metadata**. ## Pantheon Zero Daze is the canonical case. Caspian’s phrase that his life has been a lie compresses a more exact condition: **the life occurred; the causal model of the life was falsified.** This distinction prevents two opposite errors. The first is to say nothing was real because some relationships were staged. The second is to say nothing important was altered because Caspian really experienced the events. Both fail. A person partly constructs identity by interpreting the causes of their experience. Falsifying those causes alters the person’s access to their own history. ## Provenance Fields A mature autobiographical record may need to distinguish: - event; - apparent cause; - actual cause where known; - initiator; - participant role; - institutional affiliation; - compensation or tasking; - intervention status; - confidence; - later correction history. This makes the concept directly relevant to Continuity Telemetry and Reconstructed Person. A reconstruction built from records whose causal provenance has been corrupted can be coherent and still be wrong. ## Covert Operations Historical undercover and intelligence practices demonstrate that fabricated social provenance is an ordinary operational possibility. A cover identity is a false account of who a participant is. A handler relationship is a concealed account of who directs whom. An infiltration operation is a concealed account of why a participant entered a social environment. The experiences generated around those facts remain real to the people who lived them. ## Simulation Bridge The concept also applies to simulated worlds. A simulated event can be experientially real to an inhabitant while the inhabitant is wrong about the world’s causal origin. The Thirteenth Floor generalizes this from biography to ontology. ## Key Insight **Truth about experience and truth about authorship are separate epistemic dimensions.** A subject can remember an event accurately while misunderstanding the system that caused it. That is why construction transparency is not merely disclosure about technology. It is access to the causal provenance of one’s own life. ## See Also Construction Transparency · Covert Handler Architecture · World Simulation · Continuity Evidence vs Continuity
