# Fossil Record **Domain:** Paleontology / Evidence / Deep Time **Doc Type:** Canonical Evidence Node **Maturity:** Foundational ## Definition The **fossil record** is the preserved, necessarily incomplete evidence of past life found in bodies, traces and their geological contexts. It is sampled unevenly because preservation, exposure, discovery and collection are selective processes. ## Evolutionary Nexus [[articles/The Evolutionary Roots of Silicon Valley|The Evolutionary Roots of Silicon Valley]] links paleontological reconstruction to genomics and machine inference: all recover latent history from partial traces. Fossils provide morphology and context; molecules provide inherited sequence; algorithms formalize comparison and inference. The continuity boundary is essential. A fossil may strongly establish ancestry, form and environment while instantiating none of the organism's former experience. It is continuity evidence, not consciousness continuity.
