# Franciscan Complex **Domain:** Geology / Deep Time / Regional Systems **Doc Type:** Canonical Geological Node **Maturity:** Developed ## Definition The **Franciscan Complex** is a heterogeneous assemblage of sedimentary, volcanic and metamorphic rocks formed largely in an ancient subduction system and accreted to western North America. Around the San Francisco Peninsula it includes greywacke, chert, greenstone, blueschist and associated serpentinite-bearing terranes. ## Nexus Context In [[articles/The Evolutionary Roots of Silicon Valley|The Evolutionary Roots of Silicon Valley]], the Franciscan Complex is both literal foundation and disciplined analogy. It is an archive assembled from transported fragments under pressure—not a designed whole.
