## Definition
**Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)** maps brain activity indirectly through blood-oxygen-level-dependent and related hemodynamic signals. It offers broad spatial coverage and millimeter-scale localization but lower temporal resolution than electrophysiological methods.
## Interface relevance
fMRI is used for functional mapping and semantic decoding as well as clinical and research imaging. Voxel coordinates, acquisition sequences, timing, preprocessing, events, and subject context are required to interpret a derived activation pattern.
