## Definition
**GNUstep** is a free-software implementation of the OpenStep object and application-development environment. Its Objective-C frameworks, graphical toolkit, development tools and desktop applications preserve an independently buildable branch of the architectural lineage associated with NeXT, OPENSTEP and later Apple Cocoa systems.
## Architectural Significance
GNUstep makes the lineage inspectable rather than merely historical. Framework contracts, application semantics, graphics backends, window management, property lists, archiving, portability and Objective-C runtime behavior remain available as source and can be tested across contemporary and legacy operating systems.
That portability is not automatic. For Bryant, building GNUstep and GWorkspace locally constitutes **experimental software archaeology**. It turns abstract ancestry into executable structure and reveals which relationships must survive for a platform to remain usable: compiler behavior, framework APIs, graphics backends, file formats, runtime semantics and application conventions.
