## Definition
**Gaming tax revenue** is money collected by public authorities from legally regulated gambling through taxes, license fees, assessments, and related charges. The tax base may be gross gaming revenue, handle, admission, device count, or another statutory measure.
## Significance
Gaming revenue can make the regulator fiscally dependent on activity it is also charged with constraining. That does not prove regulatory capture, but it creates an incentive structure worth recording: expansion, consumer protection, enforcement, treatment funding, and budget planning may pull in different directions.
Reported totals require attention to jurisdiction, game type, tribal-state arrangements, earmarks, and whether “revenue” means operator receipts or government collections. In 2025, the American Gaming Association reported record U.S. commercial gaming tax contributions, demonstrating the scale of the public-finance connection.
