# Human-Machine Merger
**Entity class:** Transhumanist continuity model
**Domain:** Neural interfaces / artificial intelligence / human agency
## Definition
Human-machine merger is the proposed integration of biological cognition and machine intelligence until the practical boundary between them becomes porous or ceases to organize agency. The route can range from continual reliance on external systems to high-bandwidth Brain-Computer Interfaces that place machine-derived perception, memory or reasoning inside a person’s operative cognitive loop.
## Why the distinction matters
Merger is not synonymous with Machine Succession. Succession allows a nonhuman carrier to inherit civilization; merger attempts to preserve human participation inside the more capable system. Nor does functional integration alone establish personal continuity, consciousness transfer or political equality. Those questions route separately through Human Agency, Human-Machine Symbiosis, Transhumanism and Consciousness Continuity.

## Simple Reminders, Quotations, and Thoughts
> “Brain-computer interfaces are an important new frontier. They open new ways to communicate, learn, and interact with technology. BCIs will create a natural, human-centered way for anyone to seamlessly interact with AI. Merge Labs is a research lab with the long-term mission of bridging biological and artificial intelligence to maximize human ability, agency, and experience. It is developing fundamentally new approaches to BCIs that are safe and interface with the brain at much higher bandwidth by combining biology, devices, and AI.”

> “If you accept that superintelligence is going to run the world—because superintelligence is just so much more powerful than regular intelligence that it’s just obvious that it’s going to do that—then the question is: is it AI superintelligence, or is it human superintelligence? Human superintelligence seems like the correct answer if we want to retain our agency. And if we want human superintelligence, then the question is, what is the path to actually getting there?”

> “[One solution to preserving human participation in a long-run equilibrium with powerful AI] is if people become part-AI with some kind of Neuralink++. Because what will happen as a result is that now the AI understands something, and we understand it too, because now the understanding is transmitted wholesale. So now if the AI is in some situation, you are involved in that situation yourself fully. I think this is the answer to the equilibrium.”

> “When machines are derived from human intelligence but are a million times more capable, we’ll have a different respect for machines, and there won’t be a clear distinction between human and machine intelligence—there’s going to be a merger. We’re already really well along that way. If all the machines in the world stopped today, our civilization would grind to a halt. That wasn’t true as recently as 25 years ago. In 2040, our human intelligence and our machine intelligence will be very deeply and very intimately melded. But all of this is an expression of the human civilization—it’s all coming out of our civilization, it’s all a continuation of that exponential curve that I showed you.”

> “Although the merge has already begun, it’s going to get a lot weirder. We will be the first species ever to design our own descendants. My guess is that we can either be the biological bootloader for digital intelligence and then fade into an evolutionary tree branch, or we can figure out what a successful merge looks like.”
