# Humanist AI
**Domain:** Artificial Intelligence / Human Agency / Governance
**Doc Type:** Concept Node
**Maturity:** Developing
## Definition
**Humanist AI** is the design doctrine that artificial intelligence exists to increase human capability and flourishing while remaining intelligible, correctable, interruptible, and subordinate to human authority. It treats people as the ends of the system and machine intelligence as an instrument whose legitimacy depends on service to those ends.
## Operational Commitments
Humanist AI requires more than benevolent language. Systems must accept redirection and shutdown, avoid unassigned goals, preserve meaningful human judgment, and resist architectural incentives toward synthetic personhood or independent resource competition. The doctrine distinguishes augmentation that leaves people more capable from dependency that transfers practical sovereignty to the machine.
