# Identity-Rooted Error Amplification **Entity class:** Recursive security-system failure **Domains:** Identity resolution / feedback systems / predictive security ## Definition **Identity-rooted error amplification** is the compounding process that begins when observations, relationships, or risk states attach to the wrong person—or the correct person carries the wrong state—and later system activity builds upon that corrupted identity anchor. The sequence is: **identity error → distributed attention → interventions → human adaptation → new observations → reinterpretation through the original state → amplified confidence and burden** The person may document encounters, alter travel, avoid institutions, file complaints, request records, contact associates, seek counsel, or express anger and distrust. Those responses are rational consequences of unexplained friction. They also create additional administrative and behavioral data. If later actors treat the initial state as reliable, the person's reaction to error can become evidence inside the same system that generated the reaction. This process does not require a central plan. It can emerge from shared data, compartmented authority, local compliance, incomplete provenance, and delayed correction. The engineering control is to preserve causal provenance, mark observations produced after intervention, prevent complaint or redress behavior from becoming unexamined confirmation, propagate corrections, and audit derivative records. ## Relationships - **root conditions:** Identity Collision, Erroneous Watchlist Inclusion, and Distributed Erroneous State. - **feedback family:** Observation-Induced Ground Truth, Performative Prediction, and Runaway Predictive Feedback Loop. - **human consequence:** Life-Trajectory Harm. - **measurement:** Cumulative Downstream Burden. - **documented anchor:** Watchlist Misidentification. - **master harm map:** Security Harms Topology. ## Sources / Provenance - [Ensign et al. — Runaway Feedback Loops in Predictive Policing](https://proceedings.mlr.press/v81/ensign18a.html) (2018). - [Perdomo et al. — Performative Prediction](https://proceedings.mlr.press/v119/perdomo20a.html) (2020). - [GAO-25-108349](https://www.gao.gov/products/gao-25-108349) (2025-08-14). - [*Ibrahim v.
