# Intelligence Explosion
**Entity class:** Forecast concept
**Domain:** Artificial intelligence / recursive improvement
**Maturity:** Developed
## Definition
An **intelligence explosion** is a proposed process in which an intelligent machine helps produce a more capable successor, which then improves the process again, creating compounding gains in machine capability.
## Historical route
I. J. Good formulated the modern argument in 1965 through the idea of an ultraintelligent machine capable of designing still better machines. The concept now routes through Recursive Self-Improvement and AI Research Automation.
## Succession significance
The intelligence-explosion hypothesis makes AGI a possible beginning rather than an endpoint. If general intelligence includes AI research, the system that reaches human-level research capability may alter the rate at which later capability arrives.

## Evidence boundary
The idea does not establish the speed, smoothness, autonomy, or upper bound of improvement. Bottlenecks in hardware, energy, data, experimentation, validation, coordination, and security may constrain the loop.
## Simple Reminders, Quotations, and Thoughts
> "Recursive self-improvement means using AI agents to conduct AI research, closing the loop in both AI-software and AI-hardware design. The idea goes back a long way. In 1965, I. J. Good wrote about the possibility of an intelligence explosion and said that an ultraintelligent machine might be the last invention humanity ever needs to make. The reason is that, when we train AI systems that can conduct AI research, we close the loop and reach the point where AI builds better AI."
