It also names the critical canon through which selected European modernist work was framed for an international audience. The term should not be used as a synonym for [[Bauhaus]]. Bauhaus was a school with changing directors, workshops and social programs. International Style is an architectural classification that gathered work from multiple sources and was itself adapted in different places. ## Local Adaptation The tension between “international” form and local life is central to [[White City of Tel Aviv]]. Tel Aviv’s architects used flat roofs, pilotis, horizontal emphasis and simplified façades, but adapted the vocabulary through recessed balconies, shade, ventilation, gardens and urban relationships appropriate to Mediterranean conditions.
