# Johan Huizinga **Domain:** Play theory **Doc Type:** Developed Person Node **Maturity:** Developed **Collection:** Gamification Collection ## Definition **Johan Huizinga** (1872–1945) was a Dutch cultural historian whose *Homo Ludens* (1938) argued that play is not merely a leisure product of culture but one of the forms through which culture arises. He examined play in law, war, ritual, poetry, knowledge, and contest. ## Significance Huizinga supplies the collection's deepest historical correction to the idea that “game” means trivial. A rule-bounded contest can generate order, identity, obligation, and sacred seriousness. His model also establishes a boundary: play creates a temporary world with its own rules, but those rules can organize durable institutions. ## Sources - Johan Huizinga, [Homo Ludens](https://www.beacon.org/Homo-Ludens-P128.aspx) ## Routes Roger Caillois · Civilizing Process · Gamification · Playable Systems Literacy
