## Definition
**Joshua Lederberg** was a geneticist who received half of the 1958 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discoveries concerning bacterial genetic recombination and organization. At Stanford he also helped initiate DENDRAL and participated in NASA programs concerned with detecting extraterrestrial life.

The DENDRAL project asked how a computer could infer molecular structure from mass-spectrometry evidence, drawing together genetics, chemistry and AI.
The exobiology motivation should not be reduced to a cinematic question about recognizing aliens. It was an instrumentation problem: how could remote or automated analysis identify chemically significant structure where expert interpretation was unavailable?
## Continuity Context
Lederberg's bacterial work also undermined the idea of lineage as pure vertical copying. Recombination and horizontal transfer show that biological inheritance can be reticulate, a useful boundary for computational descent and model ancestry.
