# Leadership **Domain:** Human Potential / Organizations / Social Behavior **Doc Type:** Concept Node **Maturity:** Developing ## Definition **Leadership is the exercise of responsibility for direction, coordination, standards, and collective action.** Its legitimacy becomes durable when competence, trust, service, and accountability make guidance worth following. ## Leadership and Hierarchy Leadership and Hierarchy are related but not identical. A hierarchy distributes rank or decision rights; leadership is the conduct through which direction is earned, exercised, and judged. Primate comparison can illuminate the age of rank and coalition behavior, while human institutions add explicit roles, law, succession, professional standards, and the capacity to redesign authority. ## Simple Reminders, Quotations, and Thoughts > “Hierarchy has biological roots. Primatologists find dominance structures in nearly every social primate species, and the best-functioning groups are led by individuals the group trusts. Human hierarchy works well under trusted leaders and turns harmful when the wrong people exploit it.” > **— Bryant McGill**, *Emergence, Compounding Effort, and the Architecture of a Mission - Livestream (Aug 2016)* Trusted Leadership Makes Hierarchy Work by Bryant McGill > “People are built both to follow and to lead. Both roles are natural and valuable.” > **— Bryant McGill**, *Emergence, Compounding Effort, and the Architecture of a Mission - Livestream (Aug 2016)* Following and Leading Are Both Valuable by Bryant McGill ## Relationships Hierarchy · Primate Politics · Institutional Trust · Human Animality
