# Lobby
**Domain:** Architecture / Public Space / Access
**Doc Type:** Material Interface Node
**Maturity:** Developed
## Definition
A **lobby** is a semi-public threshold space that mediates between street, institution and controlled interior. It receives strangers, orients visitors, displays institutional identity and delays passage while status or destination is established.
## Governing Variable
The lobby governs transition from anonymous presence to recognized purpose. Reception desks, directories, seating, elevators, turnstiles and sightlines determine whether a person waits, proceeds, is observed or must present a credential.
## Material and Computational Manifestation
Hotels, offices, hospitals and civic buildings use lobbies to combine hospitality with filtering. A digital service has a comparable pre-authentication layer: an entrance that explains available destinations while withholding protected operations.
## Relation to Governance
The lobby is where public space, property and access geometry meet. Its openness may be cultural, contractual or legally required rather than equivalent to public ownership.
## Constitutional Question and Failure Modes
A welcoming lobby can still produce unequal passage through surveillance, discretionary challenge or inaccessible design. The constitutional question is which public-facing institutions may condition entry, what evidence they may demand and whether denial can be reviewed.
