## Definition
**Machine Mediation** occurs when technical systems structure the relation between a subject and the world the subject perceives, understands or acts within.
The machine need not replace reality or possess consciousness. Sensors select what becomes legible; models organize meaning; interfaces filter possible action; networks carry agency; and actuators turn decisions into effects. Mediation can therefore govern without issuing an explicit command.
## Scope
Machine mediation includes remote embodiment, algorithmic ranking, sensory filtering, synthetic environments, communication systems and continuity infrastructure. It is not synonymous with simulation: a materially real environment can still be machine-mediated. It is also not inherently harmful. Mediation can extend perception, mobility and agency while creating new dependencies and points of control.
Black Mirror S6E3 — Beyond the Sea makes the machine an apparently transparent bridge between astronaut and replica. The episode's tragedy shows that the bridge also carries identity, intimacy, access risk and social authority. Beyond the Sea extends that mechanism into architecture and culture: the environment can become an interface whose technical role is no longer perceived.
## Constitutional Function
Rights must attach to the system's read, write, filtering and execution powers. Perceptual Sovereignty protects the subject's experienced world; Infrastructure as Power governs dependency; and Construction Transparency preserves legibility where mediation becomes consequential.
## Key Insight
**A machine governs whenever its mediation determines what a subject can perceive, mean or do.**
