It may be an integrated [[wiki/Machine Civilization|machine civilization]], a mixed biological-machine order, a lineage of autonomous systems, or another operative arrangement capable of carrying, interpreting, and extending a [[wiki/Civilizational Payload|civilizational payload]]. ## The continuity boundary Machine succession is larger than [[wiki/Transhumanism|transhumanism]] and different from [[collections/Consciousness Continuity|consciousness continuity]]. Transhumanism generally retains a human subject as the object of enhancement, extension, or migration. Consciousness continuity asks whether a particular subject survives or is lawfully reconstructed across a transition. Machine succession asks who or what succeeds humanity as carrier and operative inheritor of civilization. The three can overlap. A successor civilization might contain continued human persons.
