# Machine Vision
**Domain:** Perception / Imaging / Artificial Intelligence
**Doc Type:** Canonical Technology Node
**Maturity:** Developed
## Definition
**Machine vision** uses sensors and computation to extract task-relevant information from images or other spatial measurements.
## Evolutionary Nexus
Muybridge's motion studies in [[articles/The Evolutionary Roots of Silicon Valley|The Evolutionary Roots of Silicon Valley]] are an early local example of apparatus-mediated perception: cameras made a locomotion phase observable by decomposing motion into frames.
## Governance Context
Vision systems do not simply see. Framing, labels, sampling and objectives determine what becomes visible and which bodies become errors. When linked to rights or enforcement, perception requires audit and appeal.
