## Definition
A **machine-mediated human environment** is a social or institutional setting in which computational systems materially shape what participants can perceive, do, prove, retain, or contest. The machine layer need not replace human authority; mediation becomes constitutional when ordinary participation depends on its categories and interfaces.
## Significance
Scores, feeds, credentials, twins, operational ontologies, APIs, and command systems can all mediate standing. The important distinction is between a prosthetic environment that extends agency and an absorptive one that makes people dependent on representations they cannot inspect or revise.
