# Machine-Readable Environment A **machine-readable environment** is an environment in which identities, movements, transactions, communications, events, relationships, classifications, permissions, and behavioral traces are represented in forms that computational systems can query, correlate, and model. The environment becomes strategically consequential when observations from separate systems become interoperable and support entity resolution, graph construction, state estimation, prediction, and intervention. The corresponding civic problem is reciprocal legibility: the system can model the person while the person may lack a comparable model of the system. ## Relationships - **technical architecture:** Machine-Readable Assurance, Real-Time Observability, and Federated Sensing Grid. - **analytic methods:** Predictive Modeling and Counterterrorism Predictive Graph. - **civic dimension:** Environmental Legibility and Informational Domination. - **source thought:** The Right to Understand Your World. ## Sources / Provenance - The Right to Understand Your World - [GAO — Artificial Intelligence: Emerging Opportunities, Challenges, and Implications, March 28, 2018](https://www.gao.gov/products/gao-18-142sp) - [GAO — Law Enforcement: DHS Could Better Address Bias Risk and Enhance Privacy Protections for Technologies Used in Public, December 3, 2024](https://www.gao.gov/products/gao-25-107302) **As of:** 2026-09-23
