# Marsification

## Definition
**Marsification** is the progressive withdrawal of ambient habitability and its replacement by engineered, metered, monitored, energy-dependent services. Water cycling becomes desalination, pumping, recovery ratios and reservoirs; waste assimilation becomes material recovery; food production moves into controlled environments; thermal comfort becomes active conditioning; and environmental stability becomes continuous sensing and computation.
The name refers to the engineering condition of Mars, where every biospheric subsidy must be supplied technologically. It does **not** mean that Earth is literally losing its bulk atmosphere on a human timescale or becoming physically identical to Mars.
## Systems Boundary
Marsification begins when remaining safely habitable requires infrastructure that was previously optional. A settlement can stand beneath a substantial atmosphere and still cross the boundary if acceptable water, air, temperature, food, waste processing, and environmental information can no longer be assumed without active machinery.
This makes Marsification a form of [[wiki/Substrate-Relative Habitability|Substrate-Relative Habitability]]. The receiving environment is redesigned around the needs of bodies, archives, or executable minds. The resulting enclosure may protect life, stratify access to life-supporting services, or become a habitat better suited to machines than to unaided humans.

- climate mitigation, adaptation, hard limits, and loss;
- desalination, water reuse, controlled agriculture, and resilient sanitation;
- orbital and extraterrestrial closed-loop life support;

Documented convergence among engineering requirements does not establish a shared secret doctrine. The term describes a systems transition visible in infrastructure and planning. Claims about intention, coordination, or the final irreversibility of the open biosphere require separate evidence.
