# Maskirovka **Domain:** Military doctrine / Deception **Doc Type:** Developed Doctrine Node **Maturity:** Developed **Collection:** [[collections/Gamification|Gamification Collection]] ## Definition **Maskirovka** is a Russian military term encompassing concealment, camouflage, deception, disinformation, feints, demonstrations, and other measures intended to mislead an adversary about forces, intentions, timing, or operational design. ## Significance Maskirovka treats the opponent's model of the situation as an operational surface. The aim is not merely to hide an object but to induce a useful misperception and thereby shape allocation, tempo, or decision. The term is often expanded too broadly in popular usage. It should not become a mystical explanation for all Russian conduct or all ambiguity.
