# Morphology
**Domain:** Linguistics / Language / Meaning
**Doc Type:** Field Node
**Maturity:** Developed
## Definition
**Morphology** is the branch of linguistics that studies the internal structure of words: how roots, prefixes, suffixes, and other meaningful units called morphemes combine to build words and change their meaning. "Un-break-able" carries three morphemes, each contributing part of the sense.
Its sister field, morphophonology, studies how sounds alternate as these parts combine. Morphology also covers changes inside a word, such as vowel pivots that mark tense or number (sing, sang, sung; foot, feet), known to linguists as ablaut and umlaut. Phonology, the study of sound patterns and phonemes, sits beside it, and [[wiki/Etymology|etymology]] traces how these parts traveled across languages and centuries.
## Corpus Context
Bryant McGill treats the study of prefixes, suffixes, roots, phonemes, and vowel pivots as the connective tissue of meaning. Breaking words into their parts reveals hidden relations between ideas, and that perception of pattern through the negative spaces between words is the intelligence he calls personal power. He develops the practice as meta-language and "code words," decoding terms such as disappointment and adventure into their parts.
