**Maturity:** Established

## Definition
A **multiscale image pyramid** stores an image or volume at several resolutions. A viewer or algorithm can use a coarse level for navigation and load higher-resolution chunks only where detailed inspection is needed.
## Continuity relevance
Neural tissue must be interpreted across organism, region, circuit, cell, synapse, and molecular scales. Multiscale representation makes those scales navigable, but transformations and provenance are required to keep observations aligned.
