# NEXTSTEP **Domain:** Operating Systems / Software Architecture **Doc Type:** Platform Node **Maturity:** Historical **Primary Source:** The Art is Long: Vespucci of Immortality **Related:** NeXT, Mach Kernel, XNU, World Wide Web, GNUstep, Riccardo Mottola --- ## Definition **NEXTSTEP** was NeXT's Unix-based, object-oriented operating environment. It combined a Mach-derived kernel foundation, BSD components, Display PostScript, Objective-C, Interface Builder, and integrated networking. ## Architectural Significance NEXTSTEP made sophisticated networked graphical applications unusually rapid to build. Tim Berners-Lee used a NeXT system to implement the first `WorldWideWeb` browser-editor and CERN httpd. Through Apple's acquisition of NeXT, NEXTSTEP and OPENSTEP technologies also entered the lineage leading through Rhapsody to Mac OS X. ## GNUstep Continuation GNUstep preserves a free-software, independently buildable continuation of the OpenStep application environment. Riccardo Mottola's public development record shows that continuity as lived engineering: porting applications, repairing frameworks, maintaining GWorkspace and testing the architecture across operating systems and processor generations. ## Surviving Archive Trail The [former NiCE NeXT User Group archive](https://ftp.nice.ch/pub/next/) remains available over HTTPS as a filesystem-style collection of NeXTSTEP/OpenStep applications, development software, drivers, source and utilities. The associated [historical and Usenet tree](https://ftp.nice.ch/peanuts/) preserves community discussions as well. One 1996 record includes Wolfgang Lerche at CERN discussing a NeXTSTEP 3.3 installation on Intel hardware, creating a direct surviving trace between the archive and CERN's operational use of the platform. See the complete archaeological map. ## Lineage Boundary NEXTSTEP did not simply “become Darwin.” The more precise lineage is NEXTSTEP/OPENSTEP → Rhapsody → Mac OS X, whose Unix core was released as Darwin/XNU.
