# Narrative Mutation
Narrative mutation is the alteration of a message as it is paraphrased, translated, excerpted, recontextualized, contested, or adapted for another community. Mutation may preserve a message's core identity, improve its fit, or reverse its original intent.
At network scale, every share places content inside a new interpersonal frame. Tracking mutation therefore requires provenance, version comparison, semantic analysis, and attention to the social context in which a variant appears.
